Part 2 Teaching English to Young Learners in Indonesia: Essential Requirements
Today I will share about the next part of the journal which I've posted on last week.
Requirements For Effective Teaching of English to Young Learners
There are 5 pilars that the author clarify about the requirement for English teacher for young learners,
#1 Accomplished teachers of English should know who children are.
In this first pilars, authour explain that the teacher should already known who the children is before taught in the classroom.
The topics and context that are going to be taught is suppose to be relevant to the learners.
#2 Accomplished teachers of English should know how children learn
In 1996 Bruner came up with an idea about the level of children's learning modes: enactive, iconic, and symbolic. Thus, teacher shall acknowledge about these in order to succed in taught english for young learners, such as;
(1) Children lern from direct experiences.
(2) Children learn from hands-on physical activities
(3) Children's thinking is embedded in here-and-now context of situation
(4) Children learn from whole to parts - holistically using scripts
(5) Children have short attention span
#3 Accomplished teachers of English should knowhow children learn a language.
Young learners are most likely acquire a language from direct contact with language in use, so children should experiencing directly how does it feel like to use a certain language. In addition, children learn a language by doing things in and with the language.
#4 Accomplished teachers of English should know how children learn English as a Foreign Language
English language in Indonesia has its own paradigm in the society which entails extra hard work for teachers in teaching this subject.
English a a foreign language has a very limited function in social communication in Indonesia, this might make the either the teacher and students are unmotivateted during the learning process. The exposures of the language outside the classroom is also very limited.
Thus, teachers shall has a knowledge about this issue and able to find the exit.
#5 Accomplished teachers of English should know the principles and should be able to do things to facilitate children learning English as a foreign language in Indonesia
Teacher shall be able to give the learners lots of exposure about English inside the clssroom since it is very limited to gain an exposures outside the clasroom. Teachers should find a fun technics to help learners engage to the language such as, physical movement, activity-based teaching-learning, like game or TPR.
