4th semester - Teaching English to Young Learners in Indonesia: Essential Requirements
Hello everyone. It's been a long time that I didn't post anything in this blog. Actually, this blog is dedicated for my reading class only. So during the holiday which is one month ago, I don't have any assignment to post in this blog.
But now I'm come back again to post the newest assignment my lecturer had gave me. She told us to review and make an paraphrase of the journal that I already read. I chose this journal that written by Bachrudin Musthafa from Indonesia University of Education, the title of it is 'Teaching English to Young Learners in Indonesia: Essential Requirements'. The reason why I chose this journal is not because I want to know about EYL nor I like kid. I chose this because I got curious on how can teacher taught a kid foreign language. I've read about behaviorism theory which is makes me interested about how can an infant learn a language. Since, this case is kind of similar and connected to each other, I decided to chose this topic.
Before I got into the paraphrase, I would like to show the structure of this journal, there are:
- Title
- Name of the author
- Abstract
- Introduction
- Requirements For Effective Teaching of English to Young Learners
- Proposed good classroom practices
- Conclusion
- References
So that is the structure of the journal. Now I will write the paraphrase of the introduction.
Decentralization system is also give an effect to Indonesian education system. This system has let the local government of each region or cities in Indonesia to make their own decision to add some portion of curricular space or in Indonesian language 'mulok' an acronym for 'muatan lokal' or in English it's called "local contents" (Jalal&Musthafa, 2001). The decision to add some portion of curricular lead public to get interested to choose English as one of the subject in elementary school. English subject became increasingly requested to be taught all over the country which offer English classes at the elementary school level. However, unfortunately the hugely requested of English language doesn't accompanied with a requirements for teachers to be able to teach English in this level is still questionable.
It is quite dissapointed that the observation that occured in the elementary school found that, a lot of elementary school English teachers still lack of professional support and opportunities for inservice training. Thus, there are still misconception occured in the process of teaching english, one of the most fatal case is teaching English to elementary school does not require the same English proficiency as teaching English at a more advanced level. However, this fatal case is still able to be rectify to prevent the failure to bound.
I think this is enought for the introduction part. I will come back next week.
See you later
